You Know the Right Move. Now Nail the Timing: The Window Finder
The decision is made; the only question left is when to pull the trigger. Here's a 4-step test, plus one paste-ready prompt, to find the window instead of guessing.
The stuck moment
You own a residential landscaping company. You've decided to add a second crew: the demand is there, your best foreman is ready to lead it, and the math works at your current close rate. The move is settled. The timing is the open question. Hire now in early July and eat six weeks of payroll before the crew is fully billable, banking on the fall cleanup rush? Or wait until February, staff up cheap in the off-season, and be trained and humming before spring? Move too early and you're bleeding cash into a slow stretch. Move too late and you miss the season you built the crew for. You keep circling it, and the calendar keeps moving without you.
The recipe: The Window Finder
Run these four moves in order. The goal is to stop treating timing as a gut feel and start treating it as a window with edges you can actually see.
Define the window's edges. Name the earliest it makes sense to move and the latest you can move before the opportunity decays. Everything useful lives between those two dates.
List the triggers and blockers. What has to be TRUE for the move to pay off (demand, cash, the right person, a supplier ready)? What's still missing? A trigger you can't yet check is a reason to wait, or a thing to go fix now.
Price the cost of early vs. late. Early = money spent before the payoff lands. Late = opportunity you forfeit by waiting. Put a real dollar figure on each. The cheaper mistake tells you which way to lean.
Set the go-signal. Pick the one observable event that says now: the booked-job threshold, the cash balance, the signed contract. When it fires, you move without re-deliberating.
The AI move (paste-and-run)
Drop your real situation into this and run it in Claude or ChatGPT:
Role: You are a strategy advisor who specializes in timing decisions for operators. You are decisive and numbers-first, not a cheerleader.
Context: I run a [business type]. I've already decided to [the move; I'm NOT reconsidering whether to do it]. My question is purely WHEN. Here's what matters: [paste your seasonality, cash position, who/what needs to be ready, demand signals, and any hard deadlines or lead times].
Task: Find my timing window. (1) State the earliest sensible move date and the latest defensible one, and why each is the edge. (2) List the triggers that must be true to move and which are still missing; flag any I can go make true now. (3) Price the cost of moving too early vs. too late in real dollars using my numbers. (4) Give me ONE observable go-signal (a specific metric and threshold) that means execute now.
Format: Four labeled sections. Use my actual numbers. End with a one-line verdict: MOVE BY [date] WHEN [go-signal].
Constraints: Do not relitigate the decision itself or say 'it depends'; if my data is thin, name the 2 things to watch for 30 days, then commit to a recommendation.
What it's worth: Getting the timing right on a five-figure hire or launch is often worth more than the decision itself: one blown season is a full year of lost margin you don't get back.
