You Already Know How to Win This: Borrow the Playbook You Already Own

You have hard-won expertise in one business. Here's how to strip it down to the transferable principle and run it in a domain you feel green in, with AI mapping the move for you.

The stuck moment. You've run a plumbing company for twelve years. You know exactly how to build a route, tighten a callback rate, and keep techs from walking. Now you've bought a small landscaping crew, and you feel like a rookie again. You keep telling yourself lawn care is a different animal. It mostly isn't. The engine that made plumbing work is sitting right there, and you're leaving it in the garage.

That's what the Transfer Engine fixes. Your edge is rarely the industry knowledge. It's the underlying pattern you run without naming it, and that pattern moves.

The recipe.

  1. Name the domain you're strong in and the one you're green in. "I know home-services dispatch. I'm new to retail."
  2. Extract the deep principle, not the surface tactic. Ask what actually made you win. Strip off the industry words until you're left with the mechanism. "Every idle truck is a bleeding cost, so I built the schedule around utilization."
  3. Restate that principle domain-free. "Expensive capacity must never sit idle." Now it's portable.
  4. Map it onto the new domain. What is the expensive idle capacity here? What's the equivalent of a bleeding truck?
  5. Ship one move this week that the transferred principle points to.

The AI move. Paste this into Claude or ChatGPT:

Role: You are a sharp operator who moves winning patterns between industries.

Context: I have deep expertise in [domain you know]. Here are 3 specific things I do there that drive results: [list 3 concrete moves and why they work]. I am now operating in [new domain], where I feel inexperienced. Here is how that new business currently runs: [3-5 sentences].

Task: Transfer my edge.
1. For each of my 3 winning moves, extract the underlying principle in one plain sentence, with zero industry jargon.
2. Map each principle onto my new domain: what is the direct equivalent, and what specific action does it point to here?
3. Flag any principle that genuinely does NOT transfer, and say why, so I don't force a bad fit.
4. Give me the single highest-leverage move to run this week in the new business.

Format: A table for steps 1-2, then a short ranked list for 3-4.

Constraints: Be concrete and specific to both businesses. No generic advice. If a transfer is a stretch, say so plainly.

What it's worth. Treating a new venture as foreign costs you a year of relearning what you already know. Transferring the pattern gets you operating like a veteran in the first quarter, not the fourth.
