Start Here: Claude & Cowork in 20 Minutes

New to AI? This is your on-ramp. The two tools worth using, one prompt formula (R.O.A.D.), and your first real result in 20 minutes, without writing code or taking a course.

If you've never actually used AI in your business, start here. Everything is plain language, and there is nothing to study first. In 20 minutes you'll know the two tools worth using, the one formula that makes every prompt work, and you'll have run your first real play. Everything here is copy-paste; the only requirement is a willingness to try.

The two ways to use Claude

You only need to understand two modes:

1. Claude Chat (claude.ai): the copy-paste workhorse. Open your browser (or the app), start a new chat, paste a prompt, get an answer. This is what every tool in this library is built for. 90% of the value is right here, and it's free to start.

2. Claude Cowork: the autonomous operator. A desktop app (on any paid plan) where you give Claude a goal instead of a prompt, and it works across your own files and apps (Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft 365) to finish a multi-step task and hand you the deliverable. You can even schedule it ("check my email every morning and flag what matters"). Reach for this once you're comfortable and want work done hands-off.

Rule of thumb: Chat for something you'll do once. Cowork for something you want done every week without you.

Your first result in 5 minutes

  1. Go to claude.ai and sign in (free).
  2. Click New chat.
  3. Paste this, filling in the brackets:

You are a sharp operator who has seen hundreds of small businesses. I run [your business, e.g. an HVAC company]. My single biggest bottleneck right now is [describe it in one sentence]. Ask me 5 questions that will help you find the real constraint, then wait for my answers.

  1. Answer its questions. That's it. You just used AI as an advisor.

Notice what made that work: you told it who to be, gave it context, and asked for a specific next step. That's the whole game, and it has a name.

The R.O.A.D. formula (memorize this one thing)

Every good prompt gives the AI a R.O.A.D. to follow:

  • R = Role. Who should it be? "You are a margin analyst…"
  • O = Objective. What do you actually want? "Find where I'm losing money."
  • A = Assets. The stuff it needs from you. "Here's my P&L: [paste it]."
  • D = Deliverable. The format you want back. "A ranked table with the dollar impact and the fix."

Miss a letter and the answer goes vague. Hit all four and it's shockingly good. Every prompt in this library is secretly a R.O.A.D. Once you see the pattern, you can build one for anything.

The 3 mistakes that make AI look dumb

  1. No Role or Assets. "Write me a marketing plan" gets generic mush. Give it a role and your real numbers.
  2. Asking once and quitting. The first answer is a draft. Say "make it shorter," "more specific," "in my voice." It's a conversation, not a vending machine.
  3. Vague Deliverable. If you don't name the format, you get an essay. Ask for a table, 5 bullets, an email, a checklist.

A one-line safety habit

Paste your business data only into your own Claude account. Keep client names, financials, and anything sensitive in your private workspace. That's the whole rule.

Where to go next

  • Pick one tool from the library that matches a problem you have this week. It's already a R.O.A.D. Just paste your Assets and go.
  • Want AI to do the work for you, on repeat? That's Cowork, and it's where the real leverage is.
  • Ready to build your own tools? Claude can help you write a reusable "skill" and we'll show you how in an upcoming guide.

You don't need to learn everything. Run one play, see it work, come back tomorrow. That's the method.
