Choose a no-code voice-agent platform without getting lost in features you'll never use.
Step 2 of 8. You have your one-line scope from Chapter 1. Now pick where you'll build. Good news: you don't write code. Voice agents are assembled in no-code platforms with a phone number, a script box, and a few toggles.
The real categories. Named platforms in this space include Vapi, Bland, Retell, and Synthflow, among others. They overlap more than their marketing suggests. Don't chase a feature list; match the platform to how much you want to touch.
- Turnkey / template-first (e.g., Synthflow-style): drag-and-drop flows, built-in booking, easiest for a non-technical operator. Start here if you want a test line live today.
- Developer-friendly but no-code usable (e.g., Vapi, Retell, Bland-style): more control over voice, latency, and call logic. Slightly steeper, still no coding required for the basics.
What actually matters (score each platform 1 to 5):
- Free trial or test minutes: can you build and call it today without a contract?
- Provisions a phone number for you: you need a real number to dial
- Visual script/flow editor: you edit words in a box, not in code
- Native calendar booking: connects to a calendar without a developer
- Follow-up (SMS/email) built in or via a simple connector
- Human handoff / call transfer: can it forward to your cell?
- Call transcripts and recordings: you'll need these to debug in Chapter 8
- Clear per-minute pricing: know your cost before you scale
Watch-outs:
- Ignore demo videos with flawless calls. Trust your own test call.
- "Unlimited" anything usually isn't. Read the per-minute rate.
- If a platform can't hand off to a human, it's a non-starter for real customers.
- Keep sensitive data private: confirm where call recordings are stored and who can access them before you send real callers to the line.
