OpenAI Will Now Train Your Team for Free: What to Grab From the New Small-Business Program, and the One Setting to Check First

On July 21 OpenAI launched a small-business program: free webinars, in-person AI academies, starter guides, and business-focused agents. Here is what is worth taking, and the 20-minute check to run before your team dives in.

What happened: On July 21, OpenAI announced the ChatGPT for Small Business program: free product webinars with small-business demos and prompts, in-person AI academies across the US, getting-started guides, and dedicated agents and partner integrations built for small-business workflows in accounting, marketing, and e-commerce. It rides on ChatGPT Work, the agent mode OpenAI began rolling out July 9, which runs on GPT-5.6 across all paid plans.

The so-what: The biggest blocker to AI in a small company is not the tool. It is that nobody trains the team, so three people dabble and the rest opt out. OpenAI just volunteered to do that training for free. Go in clear-eyed: this program exists to sell paid seats, so treat the demos as a well-produced sales pitch that happens to teach real skills. Take the skills, decide on the seats later. The prompts and workflow demos transfer to Claude or any other tool you already use.

The move (this week):

  1. Assign it, don't announce it. Pick the one person who owns operations and register them for a webinar. One trained owner-operator beats ten invited employees.
  2. Run the 20-minute check before anyone pastes company data. Confirm the team uses a business workspace, not personal accounts. Turn off model training on your data in settings. If you have not set a one-page AI use policy yet, do it before the training, so the new enthusiasm lands inside guardrails instead of shadow accounts.
  3. Bring one real task to the session. A quote follow-up, a monthly report, a hiring screen. Free training only pays when it ships something in your business the same week.
