Hand Cowork Its First Real Job, End to End
Delegate a full multi-step task to the agentic desktop app the way you'd brief a sharp new hire: scope it, hand it off with R.O.A.D., check it, and know exactly where to stay in the loop.
This is the chapter where you stop chatting and start delegating. You'll hand Cowork one real, multi-step job and watch it do the whole thing. Budget 20–30 minutes. Done right, this single habit buys back hours every week.
Pick the right first job. You want something real but low-stakes: a task where a mistake costs you a redo, not a client. Good first jobs: organize a messy folder, turn a pile of notes into a clean one-pager, compare a handful of quotes into a table, pull key figures out of several documents. Rule of thumb: multi-step, boring, and reversible.
Scope before you hand off. Two minutes here saves twenty later. Ask yourself:
- What does "done" actually look like? Name the finished thing.
- What does it need to touch? The files, the folder, the list.
- What must it NOT do? Sending, deleting, and spending are off-limits unless you say so.
Brief it with R.O.A.D. Same way you'd brief a capable new hire. Vague in, vague out.
- R = Role: who it's acting as ("a detail-oriented operations assistant").
- O = Objective: the outcome, in one sentence.
- A = Assets: exactly what it has to work with: which files, which folder.
- D = Deliverable: the exact finished artifact and its format.
The hand-off: paste this into Cowork and fill the brackets:
Role: You are a careful, detail-oriented operations assistant.
Objective: [one sentence: the outcome I want done].
Assets: Work only with [name the exact files / folder].
Don't touch anything else.
Deliverable: Produce [the exact finished thing] as [format:
a spreadsheet / a one-page summary / a renamed set of files].
Rules:
- Do NOT send, email, delete, or share anything.
- Do NOT spend money or make purchases.
- If a step is ambiguous, STOP and ask me before continuing.
- When done, show me a short summary of what you did and
where the result is.
Work step by step. Begin.
While it runs, keep loose tabs on it. Cowork narrates its steps. You're checking two things: is it heading toward the deliverable you named, and is it about to touch anything you didn't authorize? If it asks a question, answer it. That pause is a feature.
Check the output like a manager. Open the actual deliverable. Spot-check: are the numbers right on 2–3 items? Did it stay inside the assets you named? Is the format what you asked for? If it's 90% there, tell it what to fix and let it refine. You rarely need to restart.
Where to keep a human in the loop, always:
- Anything that leaves your control: sending, publishing, sharing. You give the final approval.
- Anything that spends money.
- Anything irreversible: permanent deletes, overwrites.
- Anything client- or legally-facing: you read it before it ships.
Keep those four gates and Cowork stays an asset.
Next chapter: turn today's one-off hand-off into a repeatable brief you reuse every week, so the job runs the same way every time without you rewriting it.
