Claude vs Cowork: Which One for This Job

You have two tools. Most people use one and wonder why the other feels like more work. Here is the split.

Claude is the thinker. Chat and Projects. You ask, it answers. It drafts, summarizes, rewrites, reasons, and explains. You stay in the driver's seat: you read the reply, you decide, you paste it where it goes. Fast, cheap, endless. This is where 80% of your day lives.

Cowork is the doer. It is Anthropic's agentic desktop app. You hand it a multi-step job and it goes and does it: step after step, on its own, checking its own work as it goes. Instead of chatting back and forth, you're delegating. You scope the job, hand it off, and check the result. This is where the hours come back.

The one-line decision rule:

If you'll do something with the answer yourself → Claude.
If you want the whole task done for you → Cowork.

Four operator examples:

• "Rewrite this email to a vendor so it's firmer." You'll paste it and send. One answer. → Claude.
• "Read these three proposals and go build me a comparison sheet with a recommendation." Multi-step, produces an artifact, you just review it. → Cowork.
• "What's a fair market rent range for a 2-bed in this submarket?" You want a number to think with. → Claude.
• "Pull the numbers out of these 12 PDFs, organize them, flag the outliers." Repetitive, multi-file, hands-off. → Cowork.

The tell: count the steps and count the times you'd have to touch it. One question, one answer, you act on it → Claude. Many steps, you'd rather not babysit → Cowork.

Do this now and sort five real tasks:

List the last 5 things you did at your desk that took more than 15 minutes.
For each, write ONE letter:
  C = one question, I act on the answer myself     → Claude
  W = multi-step job, I'd rather hand it off whole → Cowork

Example:
1. Wrote follow-up email to a lead .............. C
2. Compared 3 insurance quotes into a table ..... W
3. Answered a pricing question .................. C
4. Cleaned up a messy contact list ............. W
5. Summarized a long report .................... C

Every W is a job you should be delegating, not doing.
