Build Your Own AI Skill (Stop Re-Explaining Yourself)
If you keep pasting the same instructions into AI, turn it into a reusable 'skill.' Capture a workflow once, trigger it forever. This is the foundation of hands-off AI.
What it is: A "skill" is a saved set of instructions you teach AI once, then trigger anytime, instead of re-typing the same context every session. It's the step up from one-off prompts toward AI that just knows how you work.
Why it matters: The first time you write a great prompt, you save an hour. Turn it into a skill and you save that hour every time, forever, and anyone on your team can run it. This is also how Claude Cowork does real multi-step work: it leans on the skills you've defined.
When to use it: The moment you notice you're pasting the same instructions a second or third time. Onboarding docs, deal screens, listing writers, weekly reports. Anything repeatable qualifies.
How to build one (the simple loop):
- Capture: name the task, when you'd use it, and what a great output looks like.
- Draft: write the instructions in plain English.
- Test: run it on 2–3 real examples and see where it's weak.
- Refine & reuse: tweak once, then trigger it anytime.
Do it now. Paste this to have AI build the skill with you:
You are a skill designer. Help me turn a task I do repeatedly into a reusable AI "skill" (a saved set of instructions I can trigger anytime). First ask me three things: (1) what should it do, (2) when should I use it, (3) what does a great output look like. Then write the skill as clear, plain-English instructions any AI can follow, plus 2 test examples I can run to check it.
The repetitive task I want to capture: [describe it]
Save the result in a Claude Project (or as a Cowork skill) and it's yours on tap.
