8 AI Plays for a Restaurant or Multi-Unit Restaurant Group

Eight concrete AI plays that turn the data a restaurant already generates (reviews, POS exports, invoices, covers) into margin, bookings, and faster training. Ends with a paste-and-run prompt to build any of them.

Restaurants run on thin margins and thinner attention: the owner is expediting, not analyzing. These eight plays each turn a pile of data you already generate into a decision or a task, no new software required. Copy any of them into your AI tool and go.

1. The weekly review-to-fix-list. Paste your last 30 days of Google/Yelp reviews and ask AI to cluster complaints and praise into a ranked "fix list" split by kitchen vs. front-of-house. Wait times and one cold dish show up fast, and they're cheap to fix. Worth: catching a recurring problem before it costs you a dozen 1-star reviews.

2. Menu engineering from your POS. Export item-level sales and plug in food costs. Ask AI to bucket every item into Stars / Plow-horses / Puzzles / Dogs and name the 4 items to reprice, re-plate, or cut. Worth: a 2–4 point margin swing on your top sellers.

3. Labor scheduling to a target. Give AI last year's covers by day/hour and your labor-cost target. It drafts a shift schedule that staffs to demand instead of habit. Worth: trimming over-staffed slow shifts without getting slammed on peaks.

4. Invoice price-creep tracker. Photograph your produce/protein invoices weekly and have AI log unit prices over time and flag anything up more than 10%. Worth: catching silent vendor increases that quietly eat your plate cost.

5. No-show and waitlist text-backs. Draft a short confirm-and-remind text sequence for reservations plus a "table's ready" waitlist flow. Worth: fewer empty booked tables on a Friday.

6. The specials-to-social engine. Tell AI tonight's specials in one line; get three platform-ready posts and a Google Business update in your voice. Worth: daily local marketing in 3 minutes instead of 0 posts.

7. Training SOPs from a manager's Loom. Record how you want the line closed or the bar restocked; AI turns the transcript into a printed checklist new hires actually follow. Worth: cutting a week off new-hire ramp.

8. The catering/event inquiry responder. Draft a fast, warm reply template that answers common private-event questions and moves the guest to a deposit. Worth: booking the events that go cold while you're on the line.

One caution: keep employee and customer details (names, contact info, payroll) in a private business AI workspace. Never paste them into a public chat.

Build it now

Pick the play above that fits your restaurant and paste this into Claude or ChatGPT to build it:

Role: You are an operations advisor to an independent restaurant owner who is short on time and not technical.
Context: I run a restaurant and want to put the following play to work: [name the play from the list, e.g. "menu engineering from my POS export"]. Here is the raw material I have: [paste or describe your data: reviews, a POS sales export, invoices, last year's covers, etc.]. My goal is [more margin / fewer no-shows / faster training / etc.].
Task: Build the actual first draft of this tool or output for me: do the analysis or write the asset, don't just explain how. If you need a number I didn't give (food cost %, labor target, hourly rate), state a clearly-labeled assumption and proceed so I get a usable draft now.
Format: Give me (1) the finished output I can use today, (2) the top 3 decisions or actions it points to, and (3) one line on what data to feed you next week to make it sharper. Keep it tight and plain-English. Remind me to keep any employee or customer personal information in a private workspace.
